MOVE ON UP – SUPPORTED LEARNING FOR COMMUNITIES

Working in partnership with Hull University Scarborough Campus, Ryedale Voluntary Action (RVA) are engaging communities and delivering capacity building courses and short higher Education courses in Ryedale.

RVA is working with community and voluntary organisations and other agencies with good local knowledge to identify ways in which interventions and support measures can be responsive to local issue and needs.

Our main aim is to facilitate progression and retention of higher education by adults from communities currently underrepresented in higher education on the North Yorkshire Coast and in Ryedale by helping with study advice and practical support when completing assignments and/or course work. RVA will also act as the key liaison point for informal Scarborough campus visits.

This is a three year project with a planned delivery of two modules per year.  During the first academic year RVA delivered two modules entitled AN INTRODUCTION TO COUNSELLING SKILLS.  These two courses proved to be extremely popular and 26 people went on to gain their level four 10 credits towards a University Foundation Award (UFA).

The two courses for this year will be entitled AN INTRODUCTION TO DRUGS AND ALCOHOL AWARENESS and the first course will run at 9.30am to 12.30pm on Thurs 8th April, Thurs 15th April, Thurs 22nd April, Thurs 29th April, Thurs 6th May and the second course will run at 9.30am to 12.30pm on Thurs 13th May, Thurs 20th May, Thurs 27th May, Thurs 3rd June, Thurs 10th June. Both courses to be held at Community House, Wentworth Street, Malton.

We hope the courses will be of benefit to:

  • Learners who, whatever their age, wish to pursue learning contributing towards qualifications in vocational subjects.
  • Learners who want to reengage with higher education learning as part of a personal career plan, whether that involves change or enhancement.
  • Learners who wish to add to their ‘credit bank’ with accumulated credit from continuing education modules.
  • Learners who just want to ‘test the water’ in returning to higher education.
