Volunteers in the Walled Garden, Helmsley

Volunteers are the lifeblood of many Voluntary and Community Groups. In rural areas in particular many individuals also rely on volunteers.

We positively welcome any help people can give. A few hours a week can make a huge difference – 3 hours provides half a day of support to a group or individual.

Why Volunteer?

Some people support a charity as a way of saying “thank you for caring for my husband, wife, child or friend”. Or to give something back, for help they have received.

Young people may volunteer to gain experience, improve their CV or meet people outside their peer group.

Retired people may volunteer to meet new friends, learn new skills or fill their days.

Most people volunteer for a variety of reasons, and in return they have fun, make new friends, gain self-confidence and a sense of fulfilment.

The Volunteer Centre Co-ordinator will help you choose what kind of voluntary work you would like to do. We will also help you choose a charity or community group that would like your assistance. Our aim is to ensure your needs are met, as are the needs of the organisation concerned. This provides a win/win situation.

There are a great variety of volunteering opportunities. You can work alone from home or in a team on the Moors, you can design websites or give office assistance, you can campaign for a better world or help someone with their shopping. The choice is endless.

Everyone will have something to offer. You will have an ability which other groups/individuals will value.

How Do I Find Out About Opportunities?

Some of our volunteering opportunities can be found on the national website www.do-it.org.uk. All the information you have to give is your postcode. A list of opportunities and charities are then listed in order of distance from the postcode. The charities can be approached directly or through the Volunteer Centre.

If you are uncertain about what you would like to do, or what skills you have, the best way to proceed is to contact the Volunteer Centre Co-ordinator, Susan Hall who works Mondays and Thursdays.

She will arrange to meet you near your home or use the confidential interview space at Ryedale Community House, where you can discuss the opportunities which will suit your needs.
